About
Philosophical Interests:
I am interested in the philosophy of science. My current focus in the philosophy of science concerns the way the theory of evolution impacts our understanding of ourselves as human beings.
Also I am interested in phenomenology as an epistemological discipline of philosophy. In particular I have considerable interest in the works of Edith Stein - especially her Ph.D. thesis 'On Empathy' and her more extended work 'The Philosophy of Psychology and the Humanities'.
Dr. Lebech has established a new society to promote the study of the philosophy of Edith Stein, anyone interested in the philosophy of Stein, or published papers on Stein, please feel free to contact me (john.h.gurmin@nuim.ie) for more information about joining 'The International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein' (IASPES).
Finally, I have an interest in ideas as they progress through history. As such I value the history of philosophy as a discipline - it is undoubtedly interesting to see how ideas progress or regress through time.
Teaching:
At the moment I teach philosophy at NUIM and Dublin City University (DCU). At DCU I have taught Introduction to Philosophy, Phil 2 - focusing on Plato, Aquinas and Kant and finally Phil 6 which focuses on modern philosophy.
